Too often, consultants are sought for their “best practices.” They arrive, declare “the way,” and proceed to tell everyone what to do.

This mindset triggers an instant emotional reaction—hint: it’s not a positive one. It sets the stage for imbalance, not partnership. What’s lost in that dynamic is invaluable: the rich, contextual knowledge that only lives inside the client organization.

Here’s a secret from my consulting tell-all: there is no best practice, only common practice. And what’s “common” is often so generalized that it becomes irrelevant. Following universal truths without tailoring leads to diminished effectiveness and missed value.
